The Rotary Club of Pittsford is conducting its May Drive-thru Food Drive and Annual Bike Drop May 7 beginning at 9 a.m. at the Pittsford Mendon High School parking lot (472 Mendon Road). The food drive will end at noon while the bike drop will continue to 2 p.m. The club is moving the food drive to Mendon High School for May only and will return to Sutherland High School In June.

Rotarians and students from the Interact Club will be collecting food items for the Pittsford Food Cupboard and for Mothers in Need of Others. They also will be collecting old, damaged unwanted bicycles to give to R Community Bikes. In addition, the Pittsford Robotics Team will be doing a metal recycling drive.

Food items needed are taco shells; collard greens; spinach, beets; olives, lima beans; mushrooms, pizza sauce; salsa; rice sides; spaghetti (long varieties); plain oatmeal; croutons; bread crumbs; crushed, stewed, pureed or whole tomatoes; Spam; corned beef hash; clams; mackerel; herring; oysters; anchovies; tuna; pasta; corn; green beans; peanut butter; cleaning supplies; razors; women’s hygiene products; and cat and dog food (dry).

For the Bike Drop, bicycles or bike parts in any condition will be accepted for donation. The bicycles and parts will be donated to R Community Bikes, a Rochester-based charitable organization that repairs and distributes bicycles free of charge to Rochester’s children and adults in need.

“Pittsford’s Rotary Club has collected 2,366 used bikes since 2010 and we hope to increase that total number considerably this year,” said Steve Wilterdink, who is coordinating the effort for the club. “It’s a good time of the year to spring clean your garage while helping people in need.”

For many, bikes are frequently the most affordable means of transportation to jobs, schools, churches, rehabilitation and training programs, and meals at local social service agencies.
