The Pittsford Rotary Club hosted the 18th annual Kids Trout Fishing Derby from 9 to 11 a.m. last May 17 at Powder Mills Park.  Due to flooding from recent torrential rains, the only access into Powder Mills Park was from Route 96. Kevin O'Grady, who organized the event had to pass this sad news the day before the event to everyone who was planning to attend. He organized additional volunteers stationed at Park Road school redirecting anyone trying to enter the park from that end.  Fortunately, we were able to move the event from the Powderhorn Lodge to the fish hatchery which was unaffected by flooding.  Otherwise, we would have had to cancel the event.

The Town of Pittsford Parks Department staff unloaded a couple of large fish in the hatchery pond for the little fishermen to catch.  It was strictly a catch and throw fishing day.  Unlike previous years, the young fishermen were allowed to take home their catch provided they were 9” or larger.  It turned out to be a beautiful (slightly chilly) day to fish.  But everyone had to go home empty handed.

Registration for children ages 15 and younger began at 8 a.m., and a trophy presentation took place following the derby at 11:15 a.m. Refreshments were also  available courtesy of Tim Hortons.  Raffle tickets were sold to benefit the Reidman Foundation. There was no cost to attend and the derby was open to the public.
